41% of sexual assault cases proven false in 2023: Lahore PoliceBreaking

December 29, 2023

Lahore police researched false rape cases and stated an alarming 41% of sexual assault accusations against women were proven baseless in the year 2023. A total of 360 FIRs were dismissed, shedding light on a disturbing trend where false accusations are turning into a lucrative business. According to Dr. Anush Masood, SSP Investigation, the majority of these false cases were rooted in relationship ‘disputes’. Out of the 860 sexual abuse cases registered in the past 11 months, 350 were found to be false and subsequently dismissed, while charges were filed in 375 cases. Currently, 135 cases remain under investigation. Legal experts are now emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive legislation to curb the rising tide of false accusations, which they describe as a heinous business. Israr Ahmed Butt, a senior lawyer, stressed the detrimental impact of such cases on the justice system, labeling them as obstacles in providing justice to genuinely affected women.

The investigation uncovered a disturbing pattern where personal vendettas and transaction disputes played a significant role in fabricating sexual assault claims. This revelation raises concerns about the credibility of accusations and the potential misuse of the legal system for personal gain. As the authorities grapple with this emerging issue, there is a growing consensus among investigative agencies and legal experts that robust legislation is essential to deter individuals from exploiting the legal system for personal motives. The report concludes with the recognition that addressing this challenge is crucial for upholding justice and ensuring the protection of genuine victims of sexual assault.
