As many as 30 bunkers have been destroyed in Kurrum district so far as their demolition continues following a peace deal reached between warring factions a month ago. It reported that there were over 250 bunkers in the area. They informed that 453 vehicles, carrying food items for the people, had reached the area in the last few weeks. Similarly, they added, the distribution of cheques among the residents of the area was also underway.
A month ago, a traditional grand assembly of tribal elders mediated an agreement between the warring sides in Kurram, where years-old land disputes have often led to deadly sectarian clashes. “Both sides have agreed to demolish their bunkers and surrender their heavy weapons to authorities,” Adviser to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister on Information and Public Relations Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif said in a post on X.
He stated that anyone found guilty of violating the pact's terms would be apprehended and punished in line with local traditions. Saif congratulated the nearly 800,000 residents of Kurram on the signing of the pact, assuring them the deal would “soon restore calm and security”.The most recent round of violence had erupted in the district on November 21, when gunmen ambushed a convoy of vehicles, killing 52 of them. Although no one claimed responsibility for the massacre, it led to retaliatory attacks, raising the overall death toll to more than 130.
