China to continue taking part in Pakistan's socio-economic development: Li QiangBreaking

Islamabad, October 14 (INP): Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang reaffirmed China’s commitment to the development and prosperity of Pakistan, stating that the bond between the two nations is "eternal." Speaking at the virtual inauguration of the New Gwadar International Airport on Monday, Li emphasised that the completion of this critical infrastructure project marks a significant milestone under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). In his remarks, Premier Li underscored the importance of Gwadar Airport for enhancing regional connectivity, calling it a "world-class airport" that reflects the strength of the friendship between Pakistan and China.

"The airport's completion will facilitate increased international trade and accelerate development in Pakistan's western regions, particularly Gwadar," he said, commending the efforts of both nations' workforces. Li Qiang further stated that the prosperity of Pakistan and its people is a priority for China. “This airport is not just an infrastructure project; it is a symbol of the close cooperation between our countries.  We are committed to working together for mutual development, and this partnership grows stronger with time,” he remarked.

 Expansion of bilateral cooperation

The inauguration was followed by a signing ceremony where several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between Pakistan and China were formalised.  These agreements include advancements in smart classrooms, cooperation in water resources, and enhanced collaboration in information and communication technology (ICT). Notably, documents exchanged during the event highlighted the outcomes of the 7th Joint Working Group meeting on Gwadar under the CPEC framework.

Among the key agreements, a currency exchange arrangement between Pakistan and China was also finalised, aimed at promoting bilateral trade in local currencies and strengthening financial cooperation.

Shehbaz welcomes Li Qiang

Chinese Premier Li Qiang arrived in Islamabad earlier in the day aboard an Air China flight, marking the first visit by a Chinese premier to Pakistan in 11 years.  Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif personally welcomed his Chinese counterpart at the airport, signifying the importance of the visit. Following the reception, Premier Li was escorted to the Prime Minister’s House, where he was presented with a formal guard of honour. 

The visit is seen as a reflection of the continued strengthening of diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries.The New Gwadar International Airport, located in Pakistan’s strategic Gwadar region, is poised to become a crucial hub for regional trade and connectivity. Its completion under CPEC is seen as a testament to the long-standing commitment of China to Pakistan's development.Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif lauded the project, noting that the new airport will be pivotal in boosting economic activities in the region and will serve as a vital link for trade between Pakistan, China, and other regional partners.
