Youth dies in police custody in JammuBreaking

A youth died in Indian police custody at a police post in Jammu district of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir on late Wednesday night. According to Kashmir Media Service, Uttam Chand, a resident of Rakh, Chakroi, was summoned to the Border Police Post (BPP) Chakroi in connection with a complaint. As per police narrative, Uttam Chand became unconscious during questioning and was rushed to Sub-District Hospital (SDH) RS Pura. He was later referred to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, where he succumbed while undergoing treatment.

Following news of his death, Chand’s family members, relatives and local residents staged a sit-in at Chakroi Chowk, alleging foul play and demanding an impartial investigation. The protesters called for the removal of the police post in-charge and other personnel involved in the tragic incident. They also demanded a government job for the deceased’s next of kin and compensation of Rs 1 crore for the bereaved family.

SP Headquarters Anna Sinha said a magisterial inquiry had been ordered into the death. Meanwhile, a 47-year-old bus driver, Mushtaq Ahmad Sheikh, was found dead inside his vehicle near the Jamkash showroom in the Chichlora area of Magam in Budgam district on Thursday. In another incident, a labourer identified as Javid Ahmed Batla alias Javid Khan, who was critically injured in an accident at the NHPC Uri-I Stage-II hydropower project site, died at Soura Hospital in Srinagar, officials said.
