Uttarakhand tunnel collapse: massive rescue operation underwayBreaking

November 13, 2023

A major rescue operation is underway in Uttarkashi district, India, where an under-construction tunnel on the Brahmakhal-Yamunotri National Highway partially collapsed on Sunday. Approximately 40 workers are currently trapped inside the tunnel, prompting a joint effort by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF), and local police to secure their rescue. The incident occurred around 4:40am, and rescue teams have been working diligently to establish communication with the trapped workers. Fortunately, all 40 individuals are reported to be safe, receiving a supply of oxygen through a pipeline.

In addition, efforts have been made to provide them with water and food items. The rescue teams have already removed 20 meters of the collapsed slab, creating an opening in the tunnel. However, around 35 meters still need to be cleared to complete the escape passage for the workers. Visuals from the site depict substantial concrete debris obstructing the tunnel, with twisted metal bars from the broken roof adding to the challenge. The trapped workers hail from various states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh.
