Indian Minister Giriraj Singh’s claim that three lakh mosques across India are “illegal” has sparked fears of widespread demolitions, targeting Muslim places of worship. According to Kashmir Media Service, Singh’s endorsement of protests against an allegedly illegal mosque in Shimla’s Sanjauli area has raised concerns about a broader agenda to erase Islamic symbols from India. He praised protesters for standing against the Waqf Board, accused of unlawful land occupation, and advocated for similar actions nationwide.
The minister’s remarks have led to tensions in Shimla, with clashes between protesters and police over the removal of a disputed mosque portion. Demonstrators demanded police verification of Muslims, claiming the presence of illegal immigrants. Himachal Pradesh Ministers Anirudh Singh and Vikramaditya Singh announced that the mosque’s portion had been sealed to “preserve communal peace.” However, the move has done little to alleviate fears of further demolitions and targeting of Muslim communities.
