Renowned MMA fighter converts to IslamBreaking

July 10, 2024

Jeffrey William Monson, an American-born Russian mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter and a former world champion, boxer, and submission grappler, has publicly announced his conversion to Islam. The 53-year-old athlete made this revelation in a widely circulated video clip, where he pronounced the Shahadah, the Islamic declaration of faith on June 20, with the guidance of a scholar at an Islamic centre in Moscow. "This journey has been one of profound transformation," remarked Monson during a press conference following the event. "Over the years, I have sought meaning and purpose in my life, and I found that Islam resonates with my values and beliefs. It provides me with a sense of peace and fulfilment that I have been searching for." Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Monson is celebrated for his achievements in jiu-jitsu, having clinched world championship titles, and for his career as a former star in mixed martial arts.

His decision to embrace Islam, he emphasized, was a result of extensive introspection and exploration of various religious philosophies. "I deliberately adopt Islam. I would like to stand shoulder to shoulder with my brothers during this complicated time. I have been thinking about it a lot, but this is a decisive step," Monson affirmed. Monson, who now holds Russian citizenship after renouncing his US nationality in 2018, has garnered a record of 60 victories, 26 defeats, and one draw throughout his career. Recently, he was elected as a deputy of the State Assembly of Bashkortostan from the United Russia party in September 2023. For Monson, his conversion represents not only a personal spiritual journey but also a commitment to a community and a faith that he believes aligns deeply with his principles and aspirations.
