Israel, Saudi Arabia close to normalizing diplomatic relationsBreaking

September 21, 2023

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) have hinted at the possibility of a normalizing diplomatic relations between their nations. In interviews and meetings in New York, they expressed optimism about the potential for normalization. Netanyahu, speaking after a meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, declared, "Under your leadership, Mr. President, we can forge a historic peace between Israel and Saudi Arabia." He believes such a peaceful relation could be a crucial step towards resolving the Arab-Israeli conflict and fostering reconciliation in the region. MbS echoed this sentiment while speaking to Fox News, saying, "Every day we get closer" to normalizing relations with Israel.

However, he emphasized the importance of addressing the Palestinian issue as part of the negotiations  Both leaders emphasized their mutual concern about Iran's nuclear ambitions. MbS warned that if Iran were to obtain a nuclear weapon, Saudi Arabia would consider acquiring one for security reasons, though he expressed a desire to avoid such a scenario. The United States has been actively working to facilitate this potential peace deal, seeing it as a significant diplomatic achievement.

It could help reduce tensions in the Middle East, counter Iran's influence, and strengthen ties between the U.S., Israel, and Saudi Arabia. However, challenges remain. Saudi Arabia seeks U.S. support for its civilian nuclear program, while Israel is cautious about making concessions to the Palestinians. The U.S. Congress may also pose resistance, given concerns about Saudi Arabia's past actions, including the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The path to peace is filled with obstacles, but the prospect of Israel and Saudi Arabia establishing diplomatic relations is a historic development that could reshape the Middle East's geopolitical landscape. The world watches with bated breath as these nations inch closer to a potential peace agreement that may bring lasting change to the region.
