India-Bangladesh ties hit all-time low as Dhaka asserts sovereigntyBreaking

May 05, 2026

India–Bangladesh relations have plunged to an all-time low, with the new government in Dhaka rejecting Indian influence amid allegations of human rights violations and disregard for sovereignty, bringing New Delhi’s regional approach under scrutiny.   Bangladesh’s newly elected government has refused to align with India, fueling Indian frustration and raising questions over New Delhi’s so-called “Neighbourhood First” policy and claims of preferential influence in the region.

Analysts say Indian actions are being portrayed as those of a domineering neighbour that undermines Bangladesh’s sovereignty while framing engagement as a strategic partnership. Despite an extradition treaty, India has not sent Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh, sparking concerns over treaty obligations and adherence to international legal norms. Youth in Bangladesh have rejected perceived Indian influence, contributing to political change and the installation of the new government.

Allegations of Indian involvement in Bangladesh’s internal affairs grew after Sheikh Hasina’s public address in New Delhi triggered domestic backlash. The domestic reaction in Bangladesh highlighted India’s potential misreading of regional political sensitivities. A more assertive posture from Dhaka indicates recalibration of its external alignments and signals deepening strain in bilateral relations.
