Centuries-old Muslim fair banned in BJP-ruled UP Breaking

March 19, 2025

BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh has banned the centuries-old Neja Mela in Sambhal, a traditional Muslim fair honoring Saiyad Salar Masud Ghazi, a revered 11th-century figure.  The fair, held annually after Holi, has long been a site of Hindu-Muslim syncretism, with Ghazi Mian’s mausoleum drawing devotees from both communities. However, the BJP and its affiliates have consistently portrayed him as an "invader" and "plunderer" to stoke communal narratives.

Denying permission this year, a senior police officer dismissed the fair as "anti-national" and insisted it would not be allowed despite its deep-rooted tradition. Sambhal ASP Shrish Chandra linked Ghazi Mian to Mahmud of Ghazni, using this historical association to justify the ban. Authorities have threatened strict action against any attempt to hold the event, aligning with the RSS-backed narrative that vilifies Ghazi Mian.  Ironically, the official website of Bahraich district, where Ghazi’s mausoleum stands, promotes the site as a major cultural and tourist attraction.

The same portal describes Ghazi Mian as a “famous 11th-century Islamic saint and soldier” and acknowledges the annual fair in his honor.  Neja Committee president Shahid Hussain Masoodi condemned the move, questioning why an event held for generations was now being banned. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also slammed the BJP for erasing syncretic traditions, stating, "The BJP is destroying every symbol of unity and brotherhood."
