352 tonnes of waste left untreated daily in IIOJKBreaking

May 13, 2026

Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir is generating nearly 1,557 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily, of which around 352 tonnes remain untreated due to incomplete infrastructure and stalled waste management projects, the administration told the National Green Tribunal.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the figures were submitted in an affidavit and Action Taken Report before the NGT in compliance with Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.

The report said 1,530.8 tonnes per day are collected and transported, but only 1,027 TPD are scientifically processed, leaving a significant gap. Srinagar Municipal Corporation is the largest waste generator with 550 TPD, followed by Jammu Municipal Corporation with 380 TPD.

While Srinagar and Jammu operate processing facilities at Achan and Kot Bhalwal respectively, several towns including Bandipora, Langate, Pattan, Uri and Frisal continue to dump waste at local sites due to non-functional or incomplete facilities.
