At least 14 people have died after a railway station roof collapsed in northern Serbia, according to CNN affiliate N1. Serbia’s Interior Minister, Ivica Da?i?, reported the updated death toll, adding that rescue operations are ongoing in Novi Sad, a city located about 70 kilometres (43 miles) northwest of the capital, Belgrade. Local media reported over 30 injuries, with two survivors currently hospitalized, according to a statement from the Interior Ministry. Rescuers are also in contact with two other individuals still trapped under the rubble, Da?i? confirmed, noting, “We are working on getting them out." Nearly 80 rescue personnel were dispatched to the site shortly after the emergency call was received.

The operation is expected to continue for several more hours. Local residents have lit candles outside the station in remembrance, while the government declared a day of mourning on Saturday. Prime Minister Miloš Vu?evi? expressed condolences to the victims’ families and thanked first responders for their swift action. Vu?evi? also pledged accountability for the disaster, saying on Serbian state TV Radio Television of Serbia (RTS), “I assure you that the responsible will be punished." According to N1, the station’s roof had been renovated in 2021, with additional work completed months later. The building officially reopened on July 5 of this year.
