The Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP) drives digital transformation in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) through the IT infrastructure and training, empowering the youth and promoting sustainable economic growth.
Talking to WealthPK, Zulfiqar Ali Khan, PRO at the AKRSP, highlighted that the IT sector in Gilgit-Baltistan was rapidly evolving, with the AKRSP fostering an enabling environment for the youth, particularly young women, through partnerships with organizations like the Special Communications Organization (SCO). “This ensures reliable internet connectivity, which is crucial for digital transformation. These efforts promote sustainable economic growth by integrating community-driven development with digital advancements.
The AKRSP’s holistic approach includes training, infrastructure development, and partnerships, helping the region overcome geographical barriers and participate in the global digital economy.’’ The AKRSP also focuses on renewable energy solutions, supporting IT hubs and development initiatives. Community-driven electrification projects have improved access to reliable power in remote areas, enhancing living standards and creating a conducive environment for education and entrepreneurship.
This sustainable approach aligns with the national goals of reducing poverty and promoting inclusive growth through innovation and technology. Talking to WealthPK, Fouzia Qazi, Programme Manager for Work and Enterprise at the AKRSP, highlighted that these IT hubs were strategically developed across various parts of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral to provide the youth with the required infrastructure and training to access freelancing markets and digital job opportunities.
“These hubs are equipped with seamless internet connectivity, uninterrupted electricity, and secure workspaces, making them particularly accessible to young women. This inclusive approach not only bridges the gender gap but also enables women to participate actively in the digital economy.’’ She pointed out that to strengthen the IT ecosystem further, the AKRSP collaborated with national and international tech companies, freelancing associations, and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) organizations.
These partnerships create opportunities for local tech startups to secure global projects, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in the region. “Additionally, tech boot camps organized by the AKRSP serve as vital platforms for mass awareness and capacity building. Hundreds of youths gain hands-on experience through these programs, refining their skills and embarking on digital career pathways.’’
She added that the impact of these initiatives was amplified by increasing investment and interest from global technology players. The AKRSP’s efforts align with its broader mission to improve the socio-economic conditions of the local communities by creating sustainable employment opportunities. This focus on inclusivity ensures that even the most vulnerable populations, including women and youth from remote areas, can benefit from the digital economy.
