New Gwadar International Airport to help elevate geopolitical status of PakistanBreaking

November 27, 2023

Under the CPEC framework, Pakistan has been actively engaged in the enhancement and expansion of its aviation infrastructure, with a particular focus on Gwadar city. The aim is to fully unlock the economic potential of this critical trade hub and expedite operations. Talking to WealthPK, Adnan Khan, a socioeconomic development specialist at the Centre of Excellence-China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CoE-CPEC), said, “Gwadar can emerge as a key player in global trade, leveraging its strategic location to facilitate seamless connectivity and trade.”

He further said: “The establishment of New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA) is a shining example of collaboration between China and Pakistan in the area of aviation as Gwadar is going to turn into an economic hub and tourist destination following the expected completion of the airport project by early next year.” “The NGIA will be the largest airport in Pakistan, elevating the geopolitical status of the region. Owing to its geographical location, the NGIA will prove as one of the leading airports not only for Pakistan but also for the region to enhance regional trade and connectivity.”

Adnan said the airport will enhance connectivity and trade with Afghanistan, Iran, China, Kazakhstan, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Qatar through the nearest available airports in the region. The official said that with the assistance of Chinese authorities, research was also being conducted to ensure a clean and green environment in the operations of NGIA. “As Gwadar is going to become a hub of world trade under CPEC, all the projects are being completed as per international standards.”

He pointed out that the development of port cities is a great challenge for the government of any country. “Gwadar is located at the last corner of Pakistan’s map and is in the farthest area. The primary bottleneck in Gwadar was the construction of the road network to link it to all areas of the country, which is now near completion. To address the key issues in Gwadar, the government has initiated numerous projects over the years.”

“Coastal Highway from Karachi to Gwadar has been constructed. Work on N-85 has also been completed while fast-track work on M8, which connects Khushab with Awaran, is under way to ensure road connectivity with Gwadar,” he said. Adnan said the evolving landscape of CPEC signifies not only infrastructural progress but also a symbol of enduring cooperation with positive implications for the entire region. “In a bold and strategic move, the Planning Commission has pledged to accelerate the CPEC projects, signalling a renewed commitment to transforming Gwadar into a global hub.”

He suggested that Pakistan needed a holistic approach to realise its potential as an international trading hub through the Gwadar Port. “This involves not only the physical development of infrastructure but also the creation of an enabling environment that addresses political, security, regulatory, and human capital factors.”
