March 13, 2023

The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has set a target of doubling the share of low-cost, clean and green electricity in the country's installed capacity by 2030.According to information available with WealthPK, the plan would add 10,000 more megawatts (MW) to the grid throughout the specified time. The generation would increase from the current 9,500 MW to about 20,000 MW.

A number of active megaprojects, including the 4,500 MW Diamer Bhasha Dam, the 4,200 MW Dasu Hydropower Project, the 800 MW Mohmand Dam, the 1,530 MW Tarbela 5th Extension, and the Kurram Tangi Dam projects, will add the extra 10,000 MW to the system.

Moreover, Mangla Power House's capacity is also being increased through refurbishment, and once those are finished, an extra 300 MW will be made accessible. The aforementioned megaprojects would store an additional 12 million acre feet of water for use in agriculture in addition to adding a sizeable amount of hydroelectricity to the system.
