November 01, 2022

Pakistan has huge trade potential with the European Union. If the European Union allows Pakistan to diversify its trade portfolio with its member countries it can get quality products at lower prices. It will also help Pakistan to increase its exports, said Federal Minister for Commerce and Investment Syed Naveed Qamar while meeting with the Executive Vice President of European Union Commission and EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis in Brussels on Friday. Asad Majeed Khan, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union, was also present at the meeting.

Naveed Qamar told the EU commissioner that the GSP+ facility has helped Pakistan increase its trade volume with the EU. This has helped to create a lot of jobs in Pakistan since industry is up and running. It has also benefited the EU since Pakistan is able to supply high quality goods at lower prices.

He assured the commissioner that Pakistan remains committed towards the effective implementation of GSP+ related international conventions. He also shared the message of sustainable development to fight threats like the climate change. He said that Pakistan looks forward to EU’s help in areas of good governance and poverty alleviation without overburdening the partner countries with fresh conditionalities.

“If the EU increases its investments in Pakistan in manufacturing and agriculture Pakistan will be able to diversify its trade portfolio with the EU. Technology transfers are also important for Pakistan to develop an indigenous industry. Pakistan looks forward to the EU for help in upgrading its manufacturing and agriculture sectors,” he said.

Vice President Dombrovskis shared the message of Naveed Qamar and assured him that EU will not leave Pakistan in the cold in its time of most need. EU will continue to support Pakistan in every possible manner.
