Pakistan’s furniture industry — once a flourishing business known globally for producing high-quality products — has experienced significant challenges and setbacks in recent years, needing government incentives to boost exports and grab a bigger share in the international market, reports WealthPK.
Zahid Hussain, Chairman of the Pakistan Furniture Association, told WealthPK that the furniture industry is very important for Pakistan's economy. A strong furniture sector can earn foreign exchange and boost the country's economic growth, but unfortunately, it is exposed to considerable challenges in recent years. "The government should offer incentives to local manufacturers so they can boost exports and grab a bigger share of the international market. The skills and creativity of local woodworkers and craftsmen have great potential that can lead to a unique furniture for export, he said. "The furniture industry is struggling right now because the production costs are rising. The prices of essential materials like wood, paint, and other hardware have appreciated a lot. Another issue is the shortage of wood, which has increased the costs for furniture makers, making it harder for them to get the materials they need at reasonable prices. Together, these problems are putting a lot of pressure on the furniture industry.” "The local furniture industry is experiencing a shortage of skilled carpenters, making it hard to meet the rising international demand. This is mainly because there aren't enough skilled workers to keep up with the growing production needs.
As a result, lack of qualified carpenters is preventing the industry from benefiting from the international opportunities and delivering products promptly,” he continued. The Pakistan Furniture Association chairman said investing in training programs for craftsmen and furniture makers could greatly improve the quality of furniture produced in Pakistan. By enhancing the skills of workers, the industry could create products of international standard. He emphasized that the workforce in this industry has a lot of skills and potential. If these talents are used well, he believes Pakistan can easily become one of the top furniture-exporting countries in the world. He pointed out that even in today’s technologically advanced era, about 90% of furniture manufacturers still use traditional methods. That means, modern technology is mostly missing in their production processes. "Adopting new technology and production techniques could greatly improve the efficiency and quality of furniture manufacturing.
The government should introduce technical education and programs to promote the use of advanced machines and processes, allowing the industry to produce high-quality furniture faster. This change could help modernize the sector and make it more competitive,” he stressed. Zahid noted that the current furniture exports are relatively low and called on government institutions to take an active role in promoting the local industry in Pakistan. "Pakistan is abundant in resources, and its workforce is highly skilled, which can greatly aid in the country’s modern development,” he said. “I know several students who started their own furniture business after finishing their studies, and they have found it to be a rewarding career. They have been successful in this field," he said. Young entrepreneurs in Pakistan's furniture and interior design industries have creative ideas. With government support and simpler business rules, the industry could reach new heights, he added.
