The Sindh government is reviewing its tourism development policy to promote the tourism sector. The policy review includes incentives for the development of the tourism sector in the next financial year. The sector has huge potential but lack of prudent policies has hindered its optimum exploitation.

“The government is actively revisiting its tourism development policies to enhance the province's appeal as a premier destination for both domestic and international travelers,” Naveed Narejo, Additional Director of Tourism Development Wing, told WealthPK.

He said the government will introduce new measures for the development of the sector in the next fiscal year. However, it has already launched various initiatives by focusing on infrastructure upgrades, regulatory reforms, and promotion of eco-friendly tourism practices.

He said a high-level meeting recently discussed the development of key tourist destinations, including Keenjher Lake, Haleji Lake, Gorakh Hill Resort, and UNESCO World Heritage site of Mohenjo Daro. The plans for Keenjher and Haleji Lakes involve transforming them into eco-tourism hubs with water sports and conservation-focused activities. Gorakh Hill Resort is set to boast improved road access and expanded lodging options, while Mohenjo Daro will see enhanced visitor facilities and preservation efforts.

These initiatives aim to showcase Sindh's rich cultural and natural heritage, fostering economic growth and cultural exchange through tourism.  Narejo informed WealthPK that the government had partnered with the Travel Agents Association of Pakistan (TAAP) to streamline and regulate the travel agency landscape in the province. “The proposed changes include mandatory acquisition of a TAAP no objection certificate (NOC) for obtaining and renewing travel agency licenses, ensuring adherence to ethical practices and consumer protection,” he said.

Additionally, a TAAP NOC is required for clients to switch travel agencies, which aims to curb unethical practices. A standardized annual fee across all travel agency license categories is also planned, alongside the digitalization of licensing process to enhance efficiency and transparency. Regarding the eco-friendly tourism initiatives, he said the emphasis was on the government's commitment to sustainable tourism.

The initiatives include developing eco-friendly tourism destinations, promoting renewable energy to power tourism infrastructure, implementing waste management programs in tourist areas, and enhancing public transportation with electric and hybrid options. “Investments are also planned for restoration and preservation of historical sites using eco-friendly materials and methods,” he said. To further enrich the tourist experience, the government announced the appointment of professional tour guides at all tourist destinations.

These trained guides will provide comprehensive information about the historical and cultural sites, ensuring memorable experiences for visitors. Narejo said the multifaceted efforts reflected Sindh's dedication to revitalizing its tourism sector through sustainable development, regulatory improvements, and enriched visitor experiences, positioning the province as a leading cultural and eco-tourism destination. In the upcoming budget, more incentives would be introduced to tap the potential of the tourism sector.
