Pink Rock Salt: Modern Processing and Packaging Need of The Hour

February 17, 2022

By Qudsia Bano ISLAMABAD, Feb. 17 (INP-WealthPK): Pink Rock Salt aka Himalayan Pink Rock Salt is a pride of Pakistan that is highly sought after in the international market due to its color and composition. Pink Rock Salt has the potential to boost Pakistan’s economy if proper mining technologies are employed. To combat the illegal use of Pakistan's Geographical Indication (GI) by other countries, the Government of Pakistan recently decided to register Pink Rock Salt from the famous Salt Range Mountains as a GI. This will stimulate and drive the producers to build their global companies. In 2018, Pakistan's exports reached their highest level in a decade, with a total value of USD52.0 million. Exports, on the other hand, fell by 4.6 percent the following year to an expected USD50 million in 2019. It is worth mentioning, however, that the entire export value increased significantly, with salt goods exports increasing at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 18.1 percent over the last five years. Pink Rock Salt is sometimes advertised as being from the Himalayas despite the fact that it is mostly mined in the hills of the Punjab region, which is also known as the Salt Range. This range is home to the Khewra Salt Mine. A rising percentage of Chinese consumers are familiar with the Himalayan salt rock from Pakistan as edible salt. Salt rock items such as Pakistan salt lamps, bath salt, and salt rock plates for steam saunas have been increasingly popular in China in recent years. In China, the sales channels for Himalayan salt lamps have been improved by combining online and physical formats. It is sold to China, the United Kingdom, the United States, and many other nations after being transformed into a variety of products such as edible pink salt, salt lamps, bath salts, and salt bricks. China imported RMB 12.2 million (Rs330 million) of Himalayan Rock Salt in the first half of 2020, according to the Chinese Customs. In addition to some packaged, branded items imported from the United States, more than 90% of China’s imported Himalayan rock salt is from Pakistan. Since customers are becoming more aware of the numerous health and skin benefits of Himalayan Pink Salt, its market has grown significantly in the Middle East. Because of its vibrant mineral profile, the category's sales have been bolstered by the increased incidence of hypertension and mineral deficiency-related disorders in the United Arab Emirates. Despite being Asia's only salt producer and the world's second-largest, Pakistan has not been able to maximize revenues or recognition from this unique product. Pakistan must establish modern processing and packaging facilities, as well as develop better marketing methods. Also, prices must be regulated, and credit must be given to Pakistan as the place of origin, and the product must be marketed with its original marking. More border checks are needed to deter its smuggling and ease its sale to domestic users.
