Given the evolving demands for skills in the global market driven by technological advancements, prioritising digital literacy can significantly enhancePakistan's IT services exports. “Digital literacy will allow the workforce of Pakistan and businesses to connect with clients and customers worldwide through online platforms, websites, and social media. This will open up opportunities to tap into international markets, expanding the potential customer base for IT services,” said Kamran Mirza, Chief Executive of Pakistan Business Council (PBC), while talking to WealthPK. According to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), by March 2023, 5,109 IT and ITeS (IT-enabled services) companies were registered with Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB). The primary technology hubs for the IT and ITeS industry are Lahore, accounting for 36.4% of PSEB registered companies, followed by Karachi at 28%, and Islamabad/Rawalpindi at 27%.
The remaining 10% of registered companies are dispersed across various locations throughout the country. Kamran said that with the promotion of digital literacy in Pakistan, new entrants into the online job market willbe able to communicate effectively with clients. “Thiswill help them understandclient requirementsand provide timely updates, eventuallyenhancing customer satisfaction,” he added. According to the Economic Survey of Pakistan 2022-23,the country generated $1.523 billion revenue by offering a range of ITservices to diverse countries during the first seven months of fiscal year 2022-23. This figure indicates a growth rate of 2.38% when compared to the corresponding period of the fiscal year 2021-22. While highlighting the importance of digital literacy in the provision of skilled labour force to IT services providers, he said, “With a digitally literate workforce, IT services providers can make use of emerging technologies and tools to offer more advanced and innovative services.
They can explore cloud computing, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and cybersecurity solutions, which are in high demand globally.” Kamran asserted that the workforce of Pakistan can learn online marketing strategies, such as search engine optimisation (SEO), content marketing, and social media campaigns. This will allow them to showcase their expertise to a broader audience, attracting potential clients from around the world, thereby becoming a source of foreign exchange earnings for the country. In May 2023, Pakistan's IT exports witnessed an impressive upswing of 24%, reaching a total of $236 million. Despite a marginal year-on-year (YoY) decline of 1% in exports, this surge from the preceding month indicates a positive trajectory for the IT sector.
