Thousands of factory workers and laborers have lost jobs after the closure of dozens of industrial units in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to financial problems, shortage of gas and power outages. According to a document available with WealthPK, at least 304 industrial units shut down in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from 2017 to 2020, rendering at least 5,000 workers and laborers unemployed.
According to the document, the industrial units closed in the province included factories of marble, soap, cosmetics, stone crushing plants, etc. The largest number of 29 industrial units were closed in Dera Ismail Khan, followed by 24 in Swat, 17 in Abbottabad and 13 in Peshawar. Likewise, in Hangu, Orakzai and Karak each 11 industrial units faced closure, while eight shut down in Mardan and five in Buner district. The closure of these units has left thousands of people unemployed with no other source of income to make ends meet.
