Govt Taking Steps to Control Power Load Shedding in Pakistan

By Muhammad Mudassar ISLAMABAD, June 07 (INP-WealthPK): The government has planned to take various steps to control power load shedding in the country as electricity shortfall has hit an unprecedented level of 7,500 megawatts. According to the minutes of a high-level meeting, available with WealthPK, out of the total 10,262 feeders, 1,926 are located within the limits of Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO), followed by the Multan Electric Supply Company (MEPCO) with 1,675, Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) with 1220 and Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) with 1212 feeders, Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) and Tribal Electric Supply Company (TESCO). No power load shedding is observed at 102 feeders of TESCO while 177 feeders where losses are less than 10 percent face average outages of six hours. The feeders with more than 80 percent losses face 14-hour load shedding. Power Division has categorised the feeders into seven different ranges according to their losses. The feeders in the first category have less than 10 percent losses, feeders in the second range have losses between 10 and 20 percent, feeders in the third category register losses from 20 to 30 percent, feeders in the fourth range have losses between 30 and 40 percent, feeders in the fifth category have losses from 50 to 60 percent and feeders in the sixth category has losses from 60 to 80 percent while the feeders that show losses from 80 to 100 percent are placed in the seventh category. The average load shedding for the month of May 2022 ranged from one hour to 12.5 hours at the feeders of all ranges. The longest duration of load shedding, 16 hours, was observed at the QESCO feeders where losses ranged from 80 to 100 percent. Out of the total 1926 LESCO feeders, 1448 have less than 10 percent losses while Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) is considered the second most efficient distribution company in the country by showing less than 20 percent losses. The most efficient power distribution company in Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) as its 1,184 feeders show less than 10 percent losses. All the feeders of FESCO are placed in the first category with observing around one-hour load shedding. Muhammad Hammad, a businessman from Hyderabad, told WealthPK that many people in the city were involved in power theft. A resident of Hyderabad city confessed that he paid Rs1,000 to HESCO employees every month and used two air-conditioners without paying any bill. The consumers said that government should provide relief to the areas showing minimum losses. They said that strict action should be taken against the people involved in power theft to reduce the losses. They said that government should also reduce the number of free units allowed to the employees of the Water and Power Development Authority and other high-ranking officials. The relevant officials told WealthPK that the government was taking several steps to control power load shedding in the country.
