The Sindh government has worked out a comprehensive strategy to harness the province’s vast mineral resources, aiming to boost economic growth, attract investment, and create job opportunities.

Sindh is rich in coal, granite, gypsum, limestone, and other valuable minerals, yet much of its potential remains untapped. With new policies and initiatives, the government seeks to develop the mining sector sustainably and efficiently. Different districts have different specialties to produce specific minerals.

Tharprkar, Jamshoro, and Thatta are rich in coal reserves. Dadu produces clay (shale), lake salt, and limestone. Other than coal, Jamshoro district’s main minerals are limestone, clay (shale), and Raiti/Bajri. Khairpur produces limestone, Fuller’s earth or Multani Mitti, trona, and laterite.

“Sindh is home to significant mineral deposits that can play a crucial role in the province’s economic development,” Nadeem Shoro, Director of Minerals in Sindh Industry Department, told WealthPK.

He said that the Thar coal reserves, among the world’s largest lignite deposits, have already begun contributing to the energy sector, while limestone, gypsum, and granite reserves hold immense potential for the construction and industrial sectors. He pointed out that other key minerals found in Sindh include salt, china clay, iron ore, and silica sand, which can be used in various industries, from manufacturing to cement production.

He said that the Sindh government’s plan focuses on expanding coal mining operations. “The Thar Coal Project has already begun supplying power to the national grid, but there is room for expansion. The government aims to increase coal extraction, encourage coal-based power plants, and improve infrastructure to facilitate transportation and usage.”

“Also, attracting private investment will be a key pillar of the policy and public-private partnerships (PPPs) will be encouraged to bring in modern technology and expertise for mineral exploration and extraction. Investors will be offered incentives, such as tax breaks and simplified regulations, to develop the mining sector further,” Shoro said.

He said that the government is keen on ensuring that mineral extraction is environmentally sustainable. “Policies will be introduced to regulate mining activities, minimise environmental damage, and promote responsible resource management.”

“Also, improved road networks, railway connectivity, and processing facilities will be developed to enhance the transportation and refinement of minerals, ensuring their efficient utilisation in industries across Pakistan,” Shoro said.

He said that specialised training programmes would be launched to equip local communities with the skills needed for jobs in the mining sector. “This will not only create employment but also ensure that mining operations have a skilled workforce.”

He said that Sindh holds vast mineral potential, but challenges such as outdated mining techniques, inadequate infrastructure, and environmental concerns need to be addressed.

“The government’s initiatives aim to overcome these hurdles by leveraging technology, attracting investment, and enforcing regulations to ensure responsible mining,” he said.

Shoro said by tapping into Sindh’s mineral wealth, the government hopes to create a robust mining sector that contributes significantly to the province’s economy. “With the right policies and investments, Sindh could emerge as a key player in Pakistan’s mining industry,” he added.
