The development of trout farms in Pakistan’s northern regions is necessary to drive economic growth, create sustainable livelihoods and tap into the area’s aquaculture potential, reports WealthPK.

“Trout farming is rapidly evolving as a key economic activity in Pakistan’s northern regions, offering transformative opportunities for local communities. With ideal conditions for aquaculture, these regions are witnessing a growing trend of individuals and families venturing into trout farming as a sustainable source of income,” said Faisal Iftikhar, Chairman of the Pakistan Fisheries Exporters Association. Highlighting the economic potential of trout farming, he said: “Trout aquaculture is not just a source of income for farm owners but also a major contributor to community livelihoods in these areas.”

Talking to WealthPK, he said the tourism boom during summer brought a surge in demand for locally farmed trout, while colder months see sustained local consumption. However, Iftikhar said despite the progress, challenges remained. “Farmers often face difficulties in maintaining consistent water quality and securing access to wider markets. Research efforts are required to address these barriers and improve farming efficiency, making trout aquaculture a more viable option for communities.” “Additionally, limited access to markets, lack of cold storage facilities, and high transportation costs hinder the industry’s growth.

Addressing these issues through public-private partnerships is crucial. The establishment of value chains, including processing units and export hubs, will further enhance the profitability of trout farming,” Iftikhar added. “Additionally, promoting trout farming as a tourist attraction can add value to this burgeoning industry. Culinary tours, farm visits, and eco-tourism packages are innovative approaches to integrate trout farming into the tourism sector,” he said. The fisheries sector currently contributes around 1% to Pakistan’s GDP, and trout farming has the potential to increase this share by fostering rural economic growth and supporting sustainable livelihoods.

By leveraging its natural resources and supporting local entrepreneurs, Pakistan’s northern regions can chart a path toward prosperity through trout aquaculture. This expansion in trout farms not only underscores the economic possibilities for these communities but also strengthens their resilience by diversifying income streams and creating new opportunities in tourism and agribusiness.
