Empowering rural women with microfinance and training is essential for driving Pakistan's agricultural growth and boosting rural economic resilience.

“As Pakistan strives to boost its agricultural sector and strengthen rural economies, there is a dire need for targeted microfinance and training programmes aimed at empowering rural women,” said Kabeer Naqvi, Chief Executive Officer of U Microfinance Bank. Talking to WealthPK, he said, “Such programmes can not only enhance economic growth but also promote inclusive development and social stability.” “Women play a vital role in the agricultural sector and possess valuable knowledge and skills that are critical for agricultural productivity and food security. Agriculture is a fundamental aspect of any country's economy, and its success largely depends on the contributions of its people, including women,” he noted. Naqvi said, “Over 50% of people in our country are women. Of the total 83 million people engaged in agriculture, 40 million are women, who play their part in various fields.” He said, “Rural women in Pakistan play a pivotal role in agriculture, from managing small farms to contributing labour in crop production and livestock rearing.

Despite their substantial contributions, they face significant barriers, including limited access to credit, technical training and market linkages.” Naqvi said by addressing these challenges through microfinance and skill development programmes, Pakistan can unlock an untapped resource in its agricultural sector. “When rural women are given access to resources, they can effectively expand their agricultural activities, increase household incomes and contribute directly to national economic growth." He said, “These programmes provide small loans that enable women to invest in essential agricultural inputs such as seeds, fertilizers and equipment. Access to credit empowers them to make decisions regarding farm production and increases their financial independence.” The U Microfinance Bank CEO said that well-structured microfinance programmes can enable women to scale up small-scale farms into sustainable enterprises, thereby enhancing their socioeconomic standing and benefiting their communities.

“However, implementing accessible and effective microfinance solutions requires careful planning,” he said, suggesting that it is crucial to foster a collaborative approach, involving all stakeholders to ensure that women entrepreneurs receive the necessary support, opportunities and resources to thrive in their entrepreneurial journeys. “They should have equal access to financial services, including loans, grants and investment opportunities.” “Alongside financial support, training programmes are also vital in equipping rural women with the knowledge and skills to optimise their agricultural practices. Specialised training on modern farming techniques, crop management, livestock care and resource conservation can enhance productivity and sustainability.”
