Educational programs can help raise awareness about the benefits of electric vehicles, while also boosting the industry's growth.
Talking to WealthPK, Zafar Ali, who recently purchased an electric scooter for his daughter, said she had been facing transportation issues. “Sensing her problems, we started searching for a solution so that she can continue her studies without interruption. Eventually, we discovered that an electric scooter could effectively solve her transportation problem. We have purchased an e-bike on installments, and now it is a daunting task for us to find a suitable mechanic for its maintenance.”
He said the government must launch educational programs for raising awareness about electric vehicles, as prior to buying this scooter they were in the dark about its existence and benefits. Dr. Shah, a faculty member of a state-run university, told WealthPK, “We have to launch educational programs targeting the youth, as such programs will sensitize them to keep the environment safe for future generations. Such programs can highlight crucial information about the economic and environmental benefits of electric vehicles.”
Scores of talented girl students cannot continue their studies due to the unavailability of transport because their parents cannot afford public or private transport. Amid such circumstances, he said it's praiseworthy that the Punjab government has launched a program for students to get bikes at subsidized rates. He urged the Punjab chief minister to make public transport available for high and intermediate level students, as these learners were also facing transport issues. Dr Shah said globally, governments were promoting electric vehicles to protect their environment and cut the fuel costs.
However, in Pakistan, most people had misconceptions about electric vehicles, considering them expensive, difficult to maintain, and not suitable for infrastructure. “We have to launch awareness programs in which the public are informed that electric vehicles can help reduce pollution. These awareness programs will also empower people to make informed decisions about their transportation options,” he said. Waleed Ahmed, a dealer at an automotive store, said electric vehicles are cost-effective compared to traditional vehicles.
The moving parts of electric vehicles are fewer than those of gasoline-powered vehicles. Thus, their operational and maintenance costs are affordable, he said. He said the adoption of electric vehicles was increasing with each passing day due to the high cost of fuel. However, the number could increase if the government made arrangements for cheaper electricity. “We need cleaner air for better health. Pollution is severely damaging our environment, and gasoline-powered vehicles contribute significantly to this menace," Waleed added.
