Digital development plan in the works in Balochistan

The Balochistan government is working on a digital development plan to improve the performance of various economic sectors.

Digital development — encompassing access to the internet, digital tools, and technological advancements — holds the potential to revolutionise various sectors in Balochistan, driving sustainable and inclusive growth. “By integrating technology into traditional industries and social services, Balochistan can unlock a new era of development and improve the standard of living for its people,” Zahoor Notezai, Project Director at Planning and Development Department, told WealthPK.

He said that the key sector benefiting from digital development is agriculture, which is the backbone of Balochistan’s economy, with the majority of the population dependent on farming. “However, traditional farming methods and limited access to technology have hindered productivity,” he said.

He added that digital tools such as mobile applications, precision farming, and drones can transform this sector by providing farmers with real-time information about weather conditions, crop management and pest control.  “Furthermore, digital platforms for market access can help farmers connect with buyers and suppliers, reducing intermediaries and increasing their income,” Notezai said.

“Another sector is education as the province faces significant challenges in terms of education infrastructure, with many remote areas lacking proper schools and qualified teachers,” he said. “Digital development offers a solution through online learning platforms, e-libraries, and digital classrooms.”

“Besides, the healthcare sector in Balochistan also faces numerous challenges, including limited access to quality services, particularly in remote areas. Digital healthcare solutions, such as telemedicine, mobile health apps, and electronic health records, can provide essential services to underserved populations,” Notezai pointed out.

The project director noted that digital development would open new opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises and larger industries in Balochistan. “E-commerce platforms, digital marketing tools, and cloud computing can help businesses streamline operations, reach new markets, and improve customer engagement.”

“The digital economy can also attract investments by helping Balochistan create a more connected and competitive business environment. By integrating digital technologies in industries such as mining, manufacturing, and textiles, Balochistan can diversify its economy and boost productivity,” he said.

Notezai said that digital development can play a pivotal role in promoting Balochistan as a tourism destination. “Online marketing, virtual tours, and digital platforms for booking accommodations and services can attract tourists, both domestic and international. The use of digital media can help raise awareness about the region's attractions, fostering tourism-related economic growth while preserving local culture and heritage.”

However, he said that there were several challenges, which must be addressed to promote digital development. He noted that one of the biggest barriers to digital development in Balochistan was the lack of reliable internet infrastructure, particularly in remote areas. “Improving connectivity through the expansion of broadband networks and increasing mobile internet penetration will be crucial to ensuring that all sectors of society can benefit from digital development.”

He said digital literacy was another significant challenge in Balochistan, as many people, especially in rural areas, lack the skills to effectively use digital tools and platforms. “Promoting digital literacy through training programmes, workshops, and awareness campaigns will be essential to enable individuals to take advantage of digital resources.”

“The digital transformation also requires robust physical infrastructure, including reliable electricity and hardware. Many parts of Balochistan still suffer from power shortages and lack access to modern infrastructure,” he said.
