The production of cooking oil and vegetable ghee climbed by 11.73% and 4.26%, respectively, in the first seven months of the current fiscal year in comparison to the same period last year. According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS)’s announcement of the quantum index of large-scale manufacturing industries, the country produced 301,185 metric tonnes of cooking oil between July and January of 2022–23 as opposed to 296,567 metric tonnes during the same period in the previous year.
In January 2023, domestic production of edible oil was 48,160 metric tonnes, up from 43,300 metric tonnes in the same month of the previous year, a growth of 11.22% on an annual basis. To meet local demand, 872,274 metric tonnes of vegetable ghee was produced domestically, an increase of 4.62% from 833,760 metric tonnes produced during the same period last year, the PBS said.
Vegetable ghee production also climbed by 11.75% to 134,460 metric tonnes in January 2023 compared to 120,318 metric tonnes in the same month a year earlier. Nevertheless, in the past seven months, wheat and rice milling fell 12.07% to 5.829 million metric tons from 6.630 million metric tons, the PBS added.
