Women working in the field of nuclear energy have been appreciated through a three-day conference with the theme of “Applications of Nuclear Techniques for Sustainable Socioeconomic Development” and its special session “Women in Nuclear (WiN) Pakistan”.
The goal of the session was to appreciate the services of women in contributing to the science of nuclear energy. It was organized by the Pakistan Nuclear Society (PNS). It is a step to empower the women of Pakistan and to motivate them to further increase their presence in society by working hard.
Ex-Director of CTC Naseem Bhatti said that “women need to be properly acknowledged for their constructive role in society. They need to be motivated and helped to take on difficult tasks. They are already working on difficult tasks. What could be more difficult than working on nuclear science and technology? Nuclear energy was considered to be a no-go area for women. Now we see that women are taking up this task more vigorously, which speaks volumes of the fighting spirit that our women have.”
Dr Ismat Fatima from PNS highlighted the role of WiN forum. She told the audience that “Women in Nuclear Global” (WiN Global) is a global non-profit organization of women working professionally in various fields of nuclear energy and radiation applications. It has currently 35,000 members from 129 countries.
“WiN Pakistan has a lot of potential to add to the field of nuclear science. It is inspiring to see a lot of women competing with their male peers. Women have started to make their presence felt in nuclear science and technology, too,” she added. “The forum can be made more effective if a formal executive body is formed after elections. It will take up the task of solving problems faced by women and listening to their suggestions.”
During the session, DCS/Head of Electronic Division PINSTECH Nazneen Kosar gave a presentation on “Instrumentation in Nuclear Power Plant,” while DCS/Head of Chemistry Division PINSTECH Dr Naila Siddique talked about Nuclear Chemistry in her address.
Dr Ayesha Ammar from NORI Hospital talked about nuclear medicine. PS of LINAC Project Dr Sumaira Javed briefed the participants about applications of LINAC, while PS of PINSTECH Samreen Shehzadi spoke about agriculture and biotechnology.
