Through partner organisations, PakVitae has distributed 15,000 micro-sized water purifiers among flood-affected residents of Pakistan.
The state-of-the-art filters are now dispensing clean water at a rate of 500,000 litres per hour at 15,000 sites. These off-grid water purifiers are easy to maintain, with a 99.9999% effectiveness rate and a two-year performance warranty. The revolutionary ERM (Esoteric Resistive Membrane) technology from within the country is used to create the purifiers.
Shayan Sohail and Arslan Ahmed, co-founders of Pakvitae and recent graduates of UET Lahore's Chemical Engineering department, have developed the technology.
Chief Operating Officer of Pakvitae Shayan Sohail, stated that this ERM technology was patented in 82 countries and had received certification from the top laboratories in the world.
The ultrafilters have gone through rigorous field testing and helped millions of people in Pakistan, India, and Africa access clean water from hundreds of polluted water sources. They have already benefited more than 300,000 people worldwide.
Numerous national and international honors, such as the Queen's Commonwealth Award and the National Innovation Award, have been given to the technology.
According to the chief operating officer , the portability of purifiers ensures the democratization of access to clean drinking water, which has proven to be the best solution for disaster-hit or remote areas.
These purifiers are given to individual families who can easily maintain them and get easily accessible clean drinking water in their homes or camps, in contrast to centralized water purification solutions that have a tendency to get crowded, require power, infrastructure, and supervision.
Each purifier has a 15-liter container and costs only Rs. 4,000. This solution reduces plastic pollution and carbon emissions because each filter provides 10,000 liters of clean drinking water, which is enough to meet the needs of a six-person family and reduces up to 2 tons of carbon dioxide and 400 kg of plastic waste over the course of two years.
