Shortage of skilled labour has emerged as one of the biggest challenges facing Pakistan’s furniture industry, hindering the manufacture of high-end furniture that meets the global standards, said Zahid Hussain, Chairman of Pakistan Furniture Association, while talking to WealthPK.

“As a developing country, one of the biggest challenges our furniture industry has been facing for quite some time is the shortage of skilled labour. The furniture manufacturing industry mainly relies on the skilled labour and its shortage can probably hinder the industry’s growth,” he said. According to Zahid, a skilled labour directly contributes to high-quality craftsmanship, which is vital for manufacturing international quality furniture. “Efficient production processes also rely heavily on skilled artisans who can effectively utilize tools and techniques to maximize production. Without sufficient skilled workers, the industry struggles to maintain the quality and creativity needed to process the international orders. This ultimately hinders the industry’s growth and competitiveness on a global scale,” he told WealthPK. “Addressing the shortage of skilled workforce demands a comprehensive strategy that includes education, awareness, and incentives.

Our furniture sector has significant growth potential. Factors such as urbanization and changing lifestyles are likely to increase the demand for modern and visually appealing furniture,” he emphasized. Additionally, adopting technology and innovative designs could play a crucial role in driving the furniture industry’s development, he pointed out. The chairman emphasized, “Incorporating trained and skilled individuals into the industrial sector will not only contribute to reducing unemployment rates but also play a crucial role in enhancing the product quality and boosting the overall capacity of the industry.” “By investing in workforce development, the companies can achieve greater efficiency and innovation, ultimately leading to a more competitive market.

This approach not only addresses the immediate challenge of joblessness but also fosters a more robust industrial environment, benefiting both the economy and consumers alike.” Talking to WealthPK, Vice President of Pakistan Furniture Association Rana Waheed said, “The furniture manufacturing industry has the potential to generate attractive export earnings; however, insufficient training and skill development of workers hinder the industry’s growth in the global market.” “The employees deficient in skills often require proper training. Targeted training programs and promoting vocational education can help promote the furniture sector in both rural and urban regions,” he emphasized.
